Grandes curiosidades del mundo del cannabis

Para todos aquellos que disfrutan del cannabis y también para aquellos otros que aún tienen mucho que aprender de esta planta, hoy traemos algunas curiosidades que seguro sorprenderán tanto a veteranos como a los más novatos:

1. A Shennong, un personaje de la mitología china que habría participado en la fundación de esta civilización hace 5000 años, se le atribuye el descubrimiento de las propiedades medicinales de decenas de plantas. Entre ellas, el propio cannabis, cuyas plantas hembra servirían según él para calmar la gota, el reumatismo o los dolores menstruales. Para ello, él mismo se encargó de probar todas y cada una de las plantas, algunas de ellas incluso venenosas. Es más, para descubrir su poder medicinal incluso llegó a consumir unos 70 brebajes distintos en un solo día.

2. La Biblia de Gutenberg, el primer libro que salió de una imprenta de tipos móviles, fue impreso en papel de cáñamo. Las 35 copias que se realizaron necesitaron de 11.130 hojas fabricadas con este material.

3. Se dice que la primera venta que se realizó por internet fue de marihuana. Lo hicieron en los años 70 estudiantes de la Universidad de Stanford usando ARPANET, la red para conectar instituciones que había impulsado el Departamento de Defensa de Estados Unidos y germen de lo que hoy es internet. Al parecer, se pusieron en contacto con colegas del MIT para la compraventa de una cierta cantidad de hierba. Sin embargo, hay quien no considera a esta la primera transacción cibernética, ya que nunca se llegó a materializar. Es más, de haberlo hecho quizá se hubieran metido en un lío, ya que por aquel entonces vender cannabis era ilegal en Estados Unidos.

4. Según las autoridades sanitarias del estado de Colorado, que legalizó el uso recreativo y medicinal del cannabisen 2014, hay más dispensarios allí que establecimientos de la firma Starbucks: a finales de 2015 había 269, mientras que solo existían 248 sucursales de la cafetería y 205 restaurantes de McDonald’s.

5. A pesar de que algunos estados estadounidenses no hayan regulado el consumo de la hierba, allá por 1619 los colonos tenían la obligación de cultivar cáñamo para fabricar cuerdas y telas. Además, por aquel entonces también se podían pagar impuestos en forma de cáñamo

6. El que algunas variedades de marihuana huelan a queso se debe a la presencia de ciertos ácidos en los terpenos, los encargados de fijar el olor del cannabis y de algunas propiedades medicinales.

7. Un hectárea de cáñamo puede producir la misma cantidad de papel que cuatro hectáreas de bosque. Por tanto, resulta más rentable y beneficioso para el medio ambiente usar el cáñamo, que, además, está listo para su uso industrial en apenas seis meses (un árbol tardaría 20 años).

8. El presidente de Estados Unidos George Washington cultivó y consumió marihuana. Según algunos investigadores, lo hizo para aliviar unos dolores provocados por su dentadura postiza. En algunas de sus cartas se lamentaba de lo que había tardado en separar las plantas hembra de las macho durante una plantación. No es el único mandatario que la usó: Kennedy también recurrió a ella para tratar sus dolores de espalda.
